The Schwerkraftmaschine: A Vari-Mu Compressor, Controllable by Plug-in

Built on an analog tube signal path and remote-controllable by plug-in, this extraordinary compressor allows both classic and completely new compression combinations.

“At Tegeler Audio Manufaktur, we design our products first and foremost with sound and musicality in mind,” says Michael Krusch. “The Schwerkraftmaschine makes the difference between ‘well mixed’ and ‘sounds perfect’.”

For the Schwerkraftmaschine, the German manufacturer went with the analog tube signal path of the proven Vari Tube Compressor, but replaced the side-chain with a chip that calculates the compression and enables it to emulate nearly any type of compressor on the market. The Schwerkraftmaschine can be remotely controlled via a plug-in (AU, VST, AAX) allowing all settings to be saved in the DAW. The hardware unit is equipped with servomotors so that the controls match the plug-in settings at all times. Users can recall their favorite settings with presets and can even automate the analog parameters, allowing for different settings within various parts of a track.

A variable side-chain-filter that works both as lowcut and as a tilt-EQ, as well as a mixer that blends compressed and uncompressed signals makes the Schwerkraftmaschine even more flexible. The Schwerkraftmaschine is hand-manufactured from high-quality components in Germany.

The Schwerkraftmaschine Today

The idea from back then – analog vari-mu signal path, digitally generated side chain, servo motors – is still the core of the Schwerkraftmaschine today. The "emulations of classic models" and "newly created programs" are now called compression modes; there are eleven, and we explain them in a series of their own: Multi-Band Complex, Diode Pressor, Breakthrough, Stereo Transformer, Vari Tube Compressor, Vocal Leveler, Optical Compressor, Drum Smasher, Classical VariMu, Chart Analysis, DeEsser. The side-chain filter works as a low-cut from 0 to 300 Hz or as a tilt filter. Besides the plug-in (AU, AAX, VST), the unit can be operated via its built-in web server in any browser; on the network it fetches its settings via DHCP, and via the plug-in it can be split into two independent mono channels. How engineers have judged the unit since: Pro Tools Expert gave it its first hardware Editor's Choice Award, and Al Schmitt mixed with it at Capitol Studios.
