Opto Compressor in API 500 format
Simple control, pristine sound
The vocal is well recorded, yet you still ride its fader through the whole session: quiet syllables up, loud phrases down. The Vocal Leveler takes over that ride. It evens out the level so the voice sits exactly where it belongs in the mix and stays there, more assertive than before. What you hear in the end does not sound like compression. It sounds like an even level: audibility, without turning it up.
We took the opto compressor from our Vari Tube Recording Channel and brought it into the compact 500 series format, so you get the Tegeler sound in the studio and on the go.
Our in-house input transformer starts with a harmonic base saturation. Then the signal runs through the proven opto circuit from the VTRC. And the FET stage at the end is wired to produce the same overtones as a tube. Tube sound, without the tube.
Taming dynamics made easy

The Vocal Leveler is a classic optical compressor with no frills. With just two knobs for gain reduction and output volume, you have exactly the parameters at hand that you really need for fast and convincing results. A three-position switch sets the timing (fast, auto or slow) and prepares you for different recording and mixing situations.
The potentiometers are stepped. Note down two values and your setting is easy to recall, without a recall system. And for stereo sources, the link switch couples two Vocal Levelers.
Don't let the name fool you
The musical compression behavior that is typical for optical compressors makes the Vocal Leveler a flexible dynamics tool, and by no means for voices only. Bass, acoustic and electric guitars and many other sources respond very well to its soft, unobtrusive compression. Driven a little harder, it stays transparent and smooth, and it doubles as protection against overloading signal peaks during recording, without flattening the microdynamics or the character of your signal.
Level or punch?
Within the Tegeler family, the Vocal Leveler is built for single tracks in the 500 series rack. Choose it when a source should sit at an even level without the compressor being heard. If you want punch and an audible compressor sound in the same format, that is the MythVCA 500. If you need the whole path from microphone to mix, that is the Vari Tube Recording Channel, the channel strip this compressor comes from. And for the mix bus and mastering, look at the Creme, the Vari Tube Compressor and the Schwerkraftmaschine. Together with the MythEQ 500, the Vocal Leveler completes a 500 series vocal chain.
