The VTC in studios around the world

Description

Vari Tube Compressor
Vari-Mu Mastering and Bus Compressor

The last step before "finished"

There's a point in every mix where the parts are right but the whole isn't breathing as one yet. The VTC closes that gap – it pulls a mix together until it stops sounding like tracks and starts sounding like a record.

It does this the old way: an all-tube Vari-Mu signal path, the same principle behind the legendary Fairchild 670. But where vintage units can feel temperamental, the VTC is built to be effortless.

What can the VTC do with your music?

  • It compresses your mix and glues it together.
  • It clears up the bass and low midrange and gives it definition.
  • It adds a golden finish to your sound.

Why it's so easy

  1. Simply turn up the input so that the music is compressed sufficiently.
  2. Get the right timing with Attack and Release.
  3. Adjust the output level.
  4. Finished!

Even at high compression, the liveliness and micro-dynamics are preserved. The VTC matches your music. With its 'gilded' tube sound and beautifully soft compression, it merges a mix into a homogeneous whole.

The VTC suits the mix bus, solo instruments and subgroups.

For the accurate reproduction of all settings, every control is equipped with 42 steps.
By default the VTC runs as a linked stereo pair. Switch the link off and the two channels work independently – for two separate mono signals.

Try it out for yourself! Register now and we will send you the VTC for 14 days so you can test it without any risks or liabilities.

Why the sounds gel together so well

Built on the Vari-Mu principle – the same used in the Fairchild 670 – the VTC has a distinct, musical character that already puts the finishing touch on many mixes.

Many hours of fitting, listening and testing went into the VTC.
It starts compressing very gently and only tightens its grip as you push it harder. A high-pass filter in the analysis circuit reduces the influence of low frequencies on the compression. Together with the right attack and release settings, this lets the VTC compress a full mix without audible pumping – even at up to 6 dB of gain reduction.

Why it adds that golden finish

Per channel, the signal passes through 3 transformers and 4 triode tubes.

Why does that matter? Tubes – especially triodes – add overtones the ear perceives as pleasant, and help the individual sound sources stand out more clearly. Instruments gain presence. Transformers convert current into a magnetic field and back again, and their gentle non-linearity adds a pleasing saturation before the signal ever reaches the compression stage. The bass becomes tidier and more defined; the treble is pleasantly rounded off.

The VTC can make the difference between "mixed quite well" and "sounds perfect".

Additional features

Sidechain low-cut filter

The low-cut sits in the sidechain only – it changes how the compressor reacts, not your sound. It keeps low frequencies from driving the compression, so heavy bass no longer pushes the whole mix into pumping.

Color/Comp switch New

Switch to Color and compression steps aside entirely – the signal is shaped purely by the transformers and tubes. Use the input control to set how hard you drive them into overdrive.

The separate Bypass switch takes the unit completely out of the signal path.

"The Tegeler is a consistent representative of the Vari-Mu compressors.

After a few listening sessions, the VTC's strength was clearly evident in its voices and bass. The Tegeler Audio Vari Tube was also able to reach top form with drum tracks or percussion."

"(...) what struck me when giving the low end a 9dB boost and the high end a 6dB boost was that the MythEQ 500 still sounded great!

This unit sounds great, has stepped knobs (recalls!) and feels solid to operate. And it also comes in this incredible wooden box that will surely get some use around your studio for those things that need a home without adding clutter."

"Drums appear more powerful and clear, vocals and guitar more full and grippy, reverberation and soft signal parts more finely resolved and more spatial.

The VTC cuts an equally good figure when refining entire mixes. it was remarkable how natural it sounded with simultaneous presence, abundance and density.

Thanks to its fantastic sound character and excellent audio and processing quality, the VTC will certainly be on the shortlist for all those who are planning to purchase a high-end compressor or sound enhancer."

"The catching of quiet signal components was done very musically and pleasantly.

The Vari Tube reminded us a bit of a Fairchild limiter in its characteristics."
