Video from August 2019 (12:23 min).
Our bus compressor and mastering equalizer Creme combines a VCA bus compressor with a pultec-style mastering Equalizert. Therefore it is mostly used on the master bus.
However, the music producer and YouTuber Rick Beato shows that the device also shines when recording and mixing stereo signals and can be used in a variety of ways.In this video, Rick uses the Creme to compress his room microphones while recording drums. As a result, the drum sound experiences significantly more size and assertiveness on its way to the computer.
What Happens in the Video
In "Top 20 Drum Intros of All Time" Rick Beato counts down his twenty favourite drum intros, played by his friend Jack Jones, whom he accompanies himself on guitar, bass and keyboards. Because many viewers had asked about his recording chain after his acoustic-guitar video, he explains it at the start: a stereo pair of AKG C414 B-ULS from the mid-80s through BAE 1073 preamps, a Royer R-122V (tube) as the mono mic through a BAE 1066 – and a stereo compressor on the room mics: the Creme.
"I'm also using a stereo compressor on the room mics. It's a Tegeler Audio compressor called the Creme." – Rick Beato, video, August 2019
What the Creme Is – and Why It Sits on the Mix Bus
The Creme is our bus compressor and mastering equalizer: a passive Pultec-style EQ and an SSL-style VCA bus compressor in one 2U unit. The order is switchable – EQ before the compressor or compressor before the EQ. On the mix bus the compressor pulls the separate parts into one whole, almost inaudibly at a 1.5:1 ratio, with a rhythmic signature of its own at higher ratios and faster timing; a side-chain filter keeps frequencies below 60 or 120 Hz out of the control circuit. The EQ offers a bass boost between 20 and 200 Hz and a high boost between 10 and 24 kHz, each 0–5 dB, every value on a rotary switch – which is why every setting is exactly reproducible. If you want plug-in recall, the Creme RC with motorized pots has it: Amazona.de reviews our Creme RC.
