After the unboxing video from Archie Beatz the Creme became “one of the most used and most necessary tools” in his Raenio Studio.
Now, he took the time to record a second more detailed video including review and demo of our unit.
What Happens in the Video
Archie Beatz – composer, producer, R&B singer and engineer, graduate of the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences where the final proficiency was on an SSL 4000G – tells what he has used the Creme for since the unboxing: the Zeus Network series "Bad Escorts", a T-Mobile commercial for Coachella and the mastering of an EP and its music video. He then walks through the controls and shows his settings: EQ before the compressor ("so it can just glue it right there"), low boost at 200 Hz, highs at 10 kHz – the sheen he also knows from his U87 –, slow attack, auto release, ratio never above 4:1, side chain mostly on full. Finally the listening comparison on his own R&B song "On Me": vocals through a Neumann U87 and a Neve 1073 emulation (Unison, Universal Audio Apollo) into Pro Tools, out of Pro Tools into the Creme and back – with nothing else added.

What the Creme Is – and Why It Sits on the Mix Bus
The Creme is our bus compressor and mastering equalizer: a passive Pultec-style EQ and an SSL-style VCA bus compressor in one 2U unit. The order is switchable – EQ before the compressor or compressor before the EQ. On the mix bus the compressor pulls the separate parts into one whole, almost inaudibly at a 1.5:1 ratio, with a rhythmic signature of its own at higher ratios and faster timing; a side-chain filter keeps frequencies below 60 or 120 Hz out of the control circuit. The EQ offers a bass boost between 20 and 200 Hz and a high boost between 10 and 24 kHz, each 0–5 dB, every value on a rotary switch – which is why every setting is exactly reproducible.
