Bucharest based audio engineer Iulian Mihaila provides video tutorials on mixing, mastering and other audio related topics on his ever growing YouTube channel. The Creme was his first hardware studio device and he was so excited about it that he made a video to share his experience. Since the Creme is in his rack, he has used it for refining his mixes but also for polishing vocals.

What the Creme Is – and Why It Sits on the Mix Bus
The Creme is our bus compressor and mastering equalizer: a passive Pultec-style EQ and an SSL-style VCA bus compressor in one 2U unit. The order is switchable – EQ before the compressor or compressor before the EQ. On the mix bus, the compressor does what made the SSL-style bus compressor a standard: it pulls the separate parts into one whole, almost inaudibly at a 1.5:1 ratio, with a rhythmic signature of its own at higher ratios and faster timing. The EQ offers a bass boost between 20 and 200 Hz and a high boost between 10 and 24 kHz, each 0–5 dB, every value on a rotary switch. That's exactly why the Creme is so easy to recall: there are no knobs you can only set approximately.

The three videos show three typical places for the Creme: as bus processing while refining a mix, as permanently integrated hardware in a top-down DAW workflow (Studio One here), and on a vocal track. That a bus compressor with a mastering EQ also works on individual tracks comes down to its design: the switchable side-chain low-cut prevents pumping, and the compression stays transparent even when it works hard. Iulian's follow-up video "Analogue mastering with VTC and Creme" then shows the Creme combined with the Vari Tube Compressor.
